IS supervision: why use action models?

action model 1

Thanks to the implementation of action models aimed at resolving incidents, the ServiceNav software allows you to go further than simply supervising the IS.

Use of action models in an operational context

When setting up an IS supervision system, what is the interest of using action models in its daily IT operations?

Using Action Templates with ServiceNav

Themonitoring tool is generally used to monitor and control the proper functioning of its information system (IS).
Its purpose is to issue alerts or display on a dashboard the events related to the state of health of the supervised IT services and equipment. It is used to control operations and alert the CIO in the event of incidents.

But why stop there?

ServiceNav's global IT monitoring software allows you to implement "action models" to go beyond simple monitoring: the resolution of incidents or problems.

Use Case 1 : Let's imagine that you are responsible for a server park in your company and that the disk space problem is constantly causing you problems. Temporary space constantly full, etc... You have of course put the storage spaces under supervision and like every day, you receive a saturated space alert. So, before the disk is completely saturated, you have to connect to the server and clean the folders to free up space. With ServiceNav, you have the possibility on the change of state of your service that monitors disk space to automatically launch actions (PowerShell script, linux command ...) to do this work automatically.

Use Case 2 : In your operating procedures a treatment is performed every night but regularly at the end of the treatment a Windows or Linux service does not restart, which will obviously generate an alert. The problem is that in the evening, you rather want to sleep than to connect to the system to restart this service. Once again, ServiceNav will help you with "action templates". All you have to do is monitor the service in question and restart it if its state goes critical (Service stopped).Discover our case studies

Implementation of an action model for a supervised service

To add an action template, simply configure the supervised service from the technical operation screen. Here I select my TeamViewer service and I will configure it to restart automatically if its status goes critical.

I select my model from the drop-down list (cf. How to configure an action template)

I select my model from the drop-down list (cf. How to configure an action template)

And now, every time my department goes critical, the action model will restart it.

Careful: If you need to stop this service during an intervention, you will need to remember to disable this model in ServiceNav otherwise it will restart automatically.
